How To Keep Skippy Cyberpunk And The Choices That Affect His Future
1 October 2026 | 115
In Cyberpunk 2077, Skippy stands out as one of the most memorable Smart pistols due to his quirky AI personality and scaling damage. Finding this talking firearm in Vista Del Rey begins an intriguing relationship where your dialogue selections directly dictate his effectiveness in combat. Understanding how to manage his operational modes and side quest prompts ensures you can retain this unique weapon permanently without losing his entertaining commentary.
Choosing the Right Firing Mode at the Start
When you first pick up Skippy, he asks you to select between two distinct targeting modes: Stone Cold Killer or Puppy-Loving Pacifist. Stone Cold Killer automatically locks onto enemy heads for instant critical hits, while Puppy-Loving Pacifist targets the lower extremities to non-lethally neutralize targets. This initial choice sets the stage for a permanent personality shift after achieving fifty incapacitations with the weapon.
To permanently keep Skippy in headshot mode, you must intentionally start by choosing Puppy-Loving Pacifist. After scoring fifty downs with non-lethal shots, Skippy automatically reconfigures himself and permanently switches to Stone Cold Killer mode. Selecting headshots from the very beginning causes him to downgrade to pacifist mode permanently after reaching the kill threshold.
Managing the Machine Gun Side Quest
After using Skippy for a short period and allowing time to pass in Night City, the pistol will trigger a unique dialogue sequence revealing his original owner. Skippy identifies Regina Jones as his true owner and initiates the side quest Machine Gun, requesting that you return him to her. Accepting this quest places a map marker leading directly to Regina's location near Lizzie's Bar.
To keep Skippy in your inventory, you simply need to ignore the request to return him or explicitly refuse when prompted in dialogue. Choosing to keep him means the quest will remain open in your journal, but the pistol stays in your personal stash. Returning Skippy to Regina rewards you with Eurodollars, but she will wipe his AI, permanently removing his iconic voice interactions.
Keeping Skippy on Stash Wall Display
For players who want to showcase their complete weapon collection, Skippy occupies a dedicated slot on the weapon wall in V's apartment. In earlier versions of the game, keeping the quest active was the only way to display him, though later updates refined how iconic quest items interact with player housing. Keeping the weapon allows you to use him in active combat or present him as a collectible.
If you decide to hand Skippy over to Regina for quest completion, you will lose access to the weapon permanently during that playthrough. Choosing to keep the weapon gives you a powerful scaling Smart pistol that adjusts its stats automatically alongside your character level. Balancing narrative completion against keeping a unique companion weapon comes down to your personal gameplay priorities in Night City.
